4 Tips for Naturally Whiter Teeth

I think it’s safe to say we all want white teeth.  I’d bet it's also safe to say that we don’t want to use harsh, damaging chemicals to get them that way.  Well, there’s good news! You can still be a hippie (and health conscious) and have a bright white grin.  Below are some of my favorite, completely natural ways to keep my smile glowing.  Can’t wait for you guys to try them!

  • Coconut oil mouthwash.

Coconut oil has so many uses and benefit,s but this might be one of my favorites!  Simply warm the coconut oil until it turns to liquid (the heat from your hands is usually enough).  Gargle a few tablespoons in your mouth for 10-15 minutes and voila!  This will not only whiten your teeth but also help pull toxins, bacteria and fungi before it can spread throughout your body.  It also helps boost immunity, fight inflammation and keep your skin clear!

*You can also add a little turmeric powder, charcoal or mint extract.

  • Strawberries, baking soda and water.

Almost sounds tasty right?  Mash up some strawberries and mix in a little baking soda and water to make a paste.  Leave the paste on your teeth for 2-3 minutes, rinse and brush with toothpaste.  An enzyme called malic acid helps lift away stains while the vitamin C washes away the plaque.

  • Turmeric powder.

The bright yellow color of turmeric powder makes this one seem a bit counterintuitive, but I promise, it works.  Just sprinkle a good amount of turmeric powder onto your toothbrush head and brush just like you normally would. But don’t rinse!  Let the turmeric paste sit on your teeth for 3-5 additional minutes.  Rinse and brush again with your usual toothpaste until all the turmeric is removed.  Not only does this help whiten teeth but it’s also great for calming sensitive gums.

  • Use a straw.

Just like with anything in the health world, prevention is key.  Drinks like coffee, tea and soda can seriously stain teeth and corrode enamel.  Even juices and water with acidic fruits and veggies (think lemon) in them can have a negative effect on the appearance of your teeth.  While I would recommend avoiding the sugary drinks, you can use a straw to suck down that healthy juice and lemon water without the damaging consequences. We love these glass straws from glass dharma. Not only will they help you have whiter teeth but they will also make you look eco-chic!
